Meteorological Miracles — although walking on water still alludes me.

Round 7 2014

I will begin this blog with an observation that could be useful to some of those reading. If anyone is planning an outdoor event in the near future they should extend an invitation to Nora as it seems her ability to supply blue skies, despite the odds, is becoming legendary.

Driving up to Waldkirch Saturday morning was, let us just say, WET! Just as well, I thought, that I had packed the wet weather gear although the upside was that the car received a good wash.

However, I should have had more faith as soon after arriving the clouds parted and as the first flight took up position the sun broke through, obviously upsetting Ron’s vision as those that were there might have witnessed.

Thanks to TCL there was a sleeve of balls (Titleist – Nice!), tees and as a special end of season goodie Footjoy gloves for each entrant. Nora, once again gold star for patience as I believe the left hand/right hand thing was a little confusing for some.

Owing to various quirks over refreshments Evelyn’s wonderful mid- round snacks were provided at the beginning of the round, ensuring the lucky ones in the first flights would benefit from a mid/mid-round refuel.

We were to play the Yellow/Red combination, with the Yellow nine a challenging water hazard test, and the Red a more undulating course with a number of blind approaches. The greens I thought though were in great condition considering the amount of traffic they would have seen this summer, so hats off to the green keepers.

Once again I was blessed in playing with a single digit handicapper. It really is a joy to watch these guys play, and it gives you motivation. It was great that Murray was rewarded with nearest the pin (My effort was actually closer but in the bunker). There was slight disappointment though that he didn’t bag the longest drive (truly a monster) as the ball came to rest just off the fairway, thus leaving our regular big hitter Tim to snap up that accolade.

My own round was peppered with school boy errors (despite wearing long trousers!), over-clubbing, under- clubbing, topping and bad alignment all forcing me to a total of 26 points. However, the good news was my back nine 16 points putting me in the draw for the Fin Bec Challenge.

Returning to the clubhouse, still under blue skies, a cold beer was quickly demolished as we waited for the following groups to complete their rounds. (Actually, make it 2 beers, 1 white wine, a glass of Prosecco and a coffee).

Apero started around 6.30 pm and with so many prizes it felt more like a Christies` Auction house meeting with awards given out thick and fast, a large proportion seemingly ending up in Sieggi`s direction –Top Man !

Congratulations to Alison on a wonderfully strong season, winning the overall points competition despite not playing in all the matches.

A fitting end to the day and the season was to see Manu achieve his HCP – so no pressure there then Evelyn.

Of course, we are all thankful to the sponsors who support Golf 4 fun, Ron, our photographer, who always manages to take brilliant photos ( except of me ), and to Nora, Dawn , Christine and Evelyn for all the help and organization. I`m already looking forward to season 2015.

As for the Fin Bec challenge? Well, it was a great finish to a very enjoyable 53rd birthday!
